Including Pions

/ Abstract
Recent progress in using effective field theory to describe systems with two nucleons is discussed with particular emphasis placed on the inclusion of pions. Inconsis-tencies arising in Weinberg’s power counting are demonstrated with two concrete examples. A consistent power-counting scheme is discussed in which pion exchange is sub-leading to local four-nucleon operators. NN scattering in the 1 S 0 and 3 S 1 − 3 D 1 channels is calculated at sub-leading order and compared with data.
