Acoustic Nature of the Boson Peak in Vitreous Silica

/ Abstract
N ew tem perature dependentinelastic x-ray (IX S)and Ram an (RS)scattering data are com pared to each otherand with existing inelastic neutron scattering data in vitreoussilica ( v (cid:0) SiO 2 ),in the 300 (cid:4) 1775 K region. The IX S data show collective propagating excitations up to Q = 3 : 5 nm (cid:0) 1 . The tem perature behaviour ofthe excitations at Q = 1 : 6 nm (cid:0) 1 m atches that ofthe boson peak found in IN S and RS.Thissupportstheacousticorigin
