A possible scenario of melting in metals

A microscopic model of preparation of a crystal to the transition into the liquid state in approaching the melting temperature is suggested. Based on simple crystal-geometric considerations and analysis of the results of calculations of corresponding anharmonic characteristics, an estimate of atomic displacements that lead to the formation of superclose-packed Bernal pseudonuclei in the solid phase is given. The physical meaning of the classical Lindemann criterion of melting is discussed.
